A Sonnet

I loved her, but she loved me not, I know;
Her dark and brooding moods gave me no rest.
She'd knock me down to drown--but even so,
Those days she's grey and strong, I loved her best. She'd frustrate me, she'd keep me from her face,
She'd wake me with a slap and a bruise to the knee.
But love came easier in her cold embrace;
My salty tears got lost in a salty sea... Although I left her, I realize, too late,
I long for her intoxicating kiss.
I'd pay to have another violent date;
To love her, it seems now, it was worth the risk... And so I dream of sunset skies that touch her-
The ocean, still too distant--and still love her...
