Semper Ego Solus

I stand now
in the kingdom of heaven
Twiddling my thumbs wondering
When I’ll come back down
To the east falls the red sun
Under it, sand billows and vents
Reminiscing two crumbling feet
A crown for bloodlines since run

Know that I sit here unburdened
With two travellers I’ve met
One says they are a king and the other;
A gamble with no risk settles no debt
And if that is the case
What did the king of nought wager?
Where once a smile stood in coarse leather
Now sits a humble stranger

I will stand as I must
Semper ego solus

From the sands of paradise
Powdered by a long-dead flock
Who hoped to be immortalised
By a long-dead god
And if I serve my living one
Will he spare my name?
Or is it better to be recalled in fear?
Be it through fury or through pain

I will stand as I must
Semper ego solus

I built my king a church
A balcony on which to lurch
I bled and bribed the truth
Flattened a town to clear his view
What now?
What now?
What now?
What now?
What now?
What now?

I will stand as I must
Semper ego solus

I will stand as I must
Semper ego solus
