No "Step" In Dad

Looking back and all I can say,
Is I hope to make you proud someday.
I know I've disappointed you and you have every right to be,
But even in the bad choices, I'm still your daughter, I'm still me.
I never meant to make you feel ashamed,
But I'm the only person anyone can blame.
Up until five years of age, I never knew a fathers heart,
For mine left before my life could even start.
But until mom met you,
Broken was all we ever knew.

And I've been meaning to tell you,
You're the best dad I ever knew.
You didn't have to take us in as your own,
Yet you've raised us, even after we've grown.
There's nothing "step" about you, you are our dad,
A man who took the place of a dad we never had.

It's hard for me to see you like this, it's not how it's suppose to be,
As tears fill my eyes, it's hard to even see.
I'm lost and confused, I don't understand why,
As I choke back the tears I silently cry.
To see one of the strongest men I've ever known, become so weak,
Emptiness is all I feel, I can hardly speak.

But I've been meaning to tell you,
You're the best dad I ever knew.
You didn't have to take us in as your own,
Yet you've raised us, even after we've grown.
There's nothing "step" about you, you are our dad,
A man who took the place of a dad we never had.

But we need you to stay strong,
To keep pushing along.
Because we need you and mom does too,
She'd be completely lost and broken without you.
Whenever you feel hopeless remember all you've done,
Because in this battle, you've already won.
So I will wipe away my tears, No longer will I be sad,
Because we were blessed with you, the most perfect stepdad.
