My Father

He showed me all the splendor
Of a sunset in the fall
He gave to us all nature
We heard the Whippoorwill's call.

He taught us of the beauty
Of the first flowers in the spring
He showed us where the wild deer came
To slack their thirst in the bubbling spring.

He gave us shadows on the wall
At night when we were small
He gave us love and we missed it all
And did not see we were his all.

Why is it that we see too late
The love he gave we returned with hate
We blamed him for our lowly state
Nor could we see we'd love too late.

Oh, how I wish I could go back
And let him know he left no lack
But gave us all the love he had
This man who was our own true dad.
