Love – Eyes open
An angelic face, lovely smile and the first kind words spoken
That was all it took for the first crush to happen
Difference in age, access to person, it mattered little
Made several detours to align with her routes, for a fleeting glimpse
One-on-one meets, was a remote surmise
Then comes a girl, that talks to me, shows interest more than askance
Head-over-heels I fall and wade deep into romance
Until the inevitable, “We were just friends” crops
When the gut wrenches out the first tear drops
The wounded heart does find a shoulder to cry
And a kindred soul gives me a second chance to try
Love blossoms from respect and pride nursed back
Vows taken, promises made, expectations stacked
Meals to be cooked, bills to be paid
Children to be nursed, careers to be made
Promises broken, passions run dry
Asking questions at the crossroads, guilt running high
Resigned to a life half-lived, wistfully looking at reserves unspent
Comes an Angel, of sparkle that is brilliant
She re-ignites feelings that were deigned stale
Heart beats go aflutter with sweet longing presumed scarce
Jobs, families and children in the mix
Age, social stigma in a state of flux
Overpowering is this love
That puts my love above all
There are no expectations, yet tribulations very clear
We are generous to our follies, we smile at our frailties
Bonds develop as much from obvious strengths as acceptance of flaws unhidden
Deep felt love, even before we have met
Respect and comfort, before our interests are whet
Love that is devoid of possession
Concern that is true and yet not an obsession
Feelings that etch indelible on wizened hearts
Blissfully unaware of the next destination
Is this what they call – Love with eyes open?
