When Day Is Done

When day is done and shadows fall
On this busy world below—
‘Tis during these hours that I recall,
Memories of long ago.
Memories of when we were young,
With a devoted mom and dad—
Memories of the song we sang,
and of the love for us they had.
They taught us about the bible—
Each and every Wednesday night;
They taught of things that were liable
To befall us when we didn’t obey their right.
Every Thursday was our family prayer night
As soon as our chores were done,
We’d kneel around the brass bed, little hands clasped tight,
With our heads bowed down and prayer was begun.
We were too young then to really realize
What this prayer session and bible class meant—
Or why tears flowed from mom and dad’s eyes
While thanking God for blessings He’d sent.
Now our mom and dad are both gone,
They’ve left eight of us behind—
I’m so happy when the day is done,
So that memories of yesterday can cross my mind.
None of us has ever strayed
Away from the teachings learned in that home.
God gave mom and dad the blessings for which they prayed;
Yes, when day is done and shadows fall,
It is so nice to recall the way
That God has certainly blessed us all,
Because our mom and dad never forgot to pray.
