Inexpressible Words

You that have lately taught my spirit ease,
dissolving and releasing all the pain,
you sweetly falling, dying cadences,
sweet falling verse, I turn to you again.
As Rustom's spear from Sohrab's wounded side
drawn, and the agony was quickly past;
as tranquil ebb after a bursting tide;
as difficult tears that brim and break at last; -
so have you soothed me, and not only so,
who speak with tongues that otherwise
were still,
and carry secret thoughts which may not go
but for your subtle and divining skill.
And you must speak the inexpressible
the helpless word that stops my mouth-
farewell.
