No one e'er his Maker's matchless might withstood,
He's ever stedfast, and supremely good,
He will fulfil, whate'er he did propose,
And none, whom he has chosen, will he lose.
It is impossible, he shou'd neglect
A single soul amongst his own elect :
Although the world, the flesh, and fiend shou'd join,
They cou'd not one of all his flock purloin.
God is with wondrous faithfulness replete,
Whate'er he once design'd, he will complete:
Our souls and bodies he will spotless keep,
'Till christ shall come, and drive to heav'n his sheep.
God chose his saints, before their birth of old,
And in the Book of Life their names enroll'd:
Nor can the fiend, on any sly pretence,
Eraze the name of any one from thence.
Whom God elected long before the fall,
Them will he, at a proper season, call,
They from their sins shall be entirely free'd,
And them, he'll to celestial glories lead.
A sure foundation (as St. Paul has said)
Our gracious God for his elect has laid:
He knows full well all them, whom he e'er chose,
And will not one of all the number lose.
O, little flock, say, why art thou afraid?
Ere the foundations of the world were laid,
Thy bounteous God to thee, for Jesu's sake,
A kingdom gave, which none can from thee take.
The Lord his fear, (to ev'ry faithful heart
In his own flock) has promis'd to impart -
To which, if it does not at all times cleave,
Yet in the same shall ne'er entirely leave.
Our heav'nly Sire has set his seal on those,
Whom he, through Jesu's mediation, chose,
And, as an earnest, with the Holy Ghost
Has fill'd their hearts, that none of them be lost.
Eternal life our blessed Saviour gives
To ev'ry one, that faithfully believes,
Nor can a single soul of them be lost,
Since they have Jesus and the Holy Ghost.
Th' Omnipotent preserves his children all,
Lest they into atrocious sins should fall,
And plenteously, through faith, on them bestows
Salvation, and in heav'n a blest repose.
God, will preserve them from a shameful fall -
God, from transgression will restrain them all -
God, will protect them, with a parent's care,
'Till they to his tribunal summon'd are.
The sons of Jacob were not sav'd of old
Because they never chang'd; but we are told,
That they were sav'd, on this account alone,
Because their God to change was never known.
A man can't be of his salvation sure,
Because he is, in his own mind, secure,
But from the promis'd covenant of heaven,
Whereby his sins, through Christ, are all forgiven.
Though Peter his Redeemer once disown'd,
Though David fell, e'en to the very ground,
Yet, afterwards, the Lord his spirit sent,
And caus'd them both sincerely to repent.
Although the sons of God do oft transgress,
And, through temptation, fall to some excess,
Their fall is, notwithstanding, ne'er so great,
But they can stand again upon their feet.
Though Peter's tongue his Master did disown,
For fear of being to a prison thrown,
His heart no treachery at all design'd,
But to his Lord was ever well-inclin'd.
Though sin shou'd chance to steal on the elect,
And all the saints, at times, their God neglect ;
Yet none of them e'er rove so far astray,
But that, though lost, they can regain the way.
Shou'd it e'er chance that God's elected Son
Shou'd err, the holy Spirit spurs him on,
By true contrition, to amend his ways;
Nor can he rest, 'till he the call obeys.
If God once chooses thee for his elect,
He never will again his choice reject ;
No change can e'er affect the God above;
Whom He once lov'd, He will for ever love.
