O Lord! who graciously wast mov'd
To give us Christ, thy best-belov'd,
To be for our transgressions slain,
And souls desponding to sustain!
O give me grace with pious care,
Like a good Christian to prepare,
That I, by faith, may eat Christ's flesh,
And on the Lord my soul refresh!
O make my heart and conscience clear,
And make my vessel still appear
Quite pure, and purg'd from ev'ry sin,
That Christ may freely enter in!
Strengthen my faith, my hopes improve,
Inflame my breast with perfect love,
My body cleanse, with spirit guide,
That Christ may in my heart reside!
Lift thou my thoughts up to the skies,
Where my Redeemer Jesus lies,
My soul let him, thro' faith, sustain,
That I may grace from Him obtain.
Persuade me that there is from heaven
A pardon to all sinners given,
And that I, for Christ's sufferings sake,
Shall of his wond'rous works partake.
Make me believe, that he will reign,
And in my bosom still remain,
And that His spirit from my heart
Will never, 'till my death, depart.
O let me not, like any brute,
The temple of my God pollute,
But ever keep the sacred scene,
Where he vouchsafes to sojourn, clean.
O make me chant, both day and night,
His praises forth with all my might,
And may He ev'ry hour be blest,
For the good cheer found at his feast!
