A Prayer For The Church

Support, O God! with thy Almighty aid
Thy glorious church, that fair wide-spreading vine,
Which thy right hand has in thy vineyard laid
(E'er since the birth of time) with art divine.

Let not the forest-boar the plant unroot -
Let not wild beasts, for our Redeemer's sake -
Let not the foe, destroy its cluster'd fruit,
Nor scathe and havock in thy vineyard make.

Be thou a wall of fire, by night and day,
This choice plantation closely to surround -
Still let thine eye the fav'rite spot survey,
And thy strong arm defend the sacred ground.

Hide it, as men from harm their eyes wou'd hide,
Feed it, as duely as the careful swain
His flock - adorn it gaily, like a bride,
And suffer not the foe its fence to gain.

Rebuild its walls, and ev'ry breach repair -
Watch at each gate, and make each inlet fast -
Strengthen its turrets, ev'ry passage bar -
Permit no enemy to lay it waste.

Suffer nor Turk, nor Pope, nor Pagan - no!
Nor any Pow'r, thy vineyard to annoy -
But still to all her foes be thou a foe,
And all her adversaries quite destroy.

Show'r thou thy blessings daily on her head,
'Till her luxuriant branches shall extend
From sea to sea, and be completely spread
O'er all the globe, unto creation's end.

O'erthrow the serpent's pow'r, and piecemeal tear
His sable throne, and crush his baleful head -
Erect our Saviour's kingdom ev'ry where,
And most triumphantly on Satan tread.

Slay thou the son of falsehood with thy breath,
Who elevates himself 'bove all that's good -
And put that old, that scarlet-whore, to death,
Who slakes her thirst, so oft, with Christian blood.

O'er all the world, Lord, let thy Gospel ride,
That ev'ry realm the blessing may receive -
That it may conquer all, both far and wide,
And ev'ry soul its doctrines may believe.

Extend, O Lord! thy righteous reign around,
To ev'ry nation, and to ev'ry place -
'Mong Greeks and Gentiles let thy gifts abound,
And make them all partakers of thy grace.

Thy tender mercies to the Jews display -
To them thy righteousness and truth explain -
Take thou their callous unbelief away,
And to thy fold admit them back again.

Bless ev'ry realm, where Jesus is ador'd,
And whose inhabitants devoutly live,
Preserve among them thy most holy Word,
'Till Christ himself to Judgement shall arrive.
