Songs And Smiles

Well-meaning friends often ask,
Am I not weary of my task,
And how I dare give voice to song—
I who have lain thus so long.

Many the times a quizzing thought
Has asked of me why I have sought
To sing my songs, though oft in pain,
And if my songs are not in vain.

To quizzing thought and you, dear friends,
I fear I offer no amends,
Except that I find songs and smiles
Help lessen intervening miles
'Twixt me and yonder peaceful crest,
Where I shall rest.
