Lament for a Wellingtonia (Sequoiadendron giganteum)

What’s this I hear, a lethal chainsaw’s roar?
This means that I shall grace this place no more.
I would like to say farewell to my friends
now that my long sojourn in Tilehurst ends,

I’ll be replaced by a new tree today
as to a younger sapling I make way.
May it grow, tall like me in future days
causing the people’s eyes to heaven gaze.
