You often ask me to be humble…
To comply as I endure so much pain…
I do so to please you, My Heavenly Father…
Unconditionally, without refrain…
As we are so often tempted…
By evilness with fiery horns…
Oh, Father, not my will, but thine be done…
As I sit here with my crown of thorns…

Good morning world...
It’s a new day...
The Sun has risen...
If we allow ourselves to live in the moment...
If we allow ourselves to receive the gift that nature offers us each and every morning...
It’s a new day...
The sky is clear...
The birds are chirping...
If we allow ourselves to leave yesterday behind us...

Despondent from the hurtful things she said,
The words of anger ringing in my head.
Upon my bed I cry and pray to You,
And often wonder if Your word is true.
But who am I to doubt Your tender love,
When You have shown me mercies from above?
The God Who made the world, the sky and sea
Sees me for who I am, and still loves me.
Almighty One who calls the stars by name

A colleague asked “Are you a Christian”?
Implying if I practice my religion every day?
What a topic, subtly graphic,
How to answer, what to say?
A moral trap to utter “Yes”,
‘Thou shalt not lie’ jumping instantly to mind,
Should I now smile, force him to guess
Not showing I’m so clearly in a bind?

Darkness engulfs, strangling every breath of hope
Restricting any kind of motion, muting every single cry
No color, No beauty, vagueness maps its scope
But his reign can still be curtailed
His arch nemesis wastes not its golden beams
The earth lays its crown down compliant with her blinding glow
It must be a crime to be this gloriously oppressive
But her elegance still sets gracefully in a romantic symphony

Dreams of life lived
younger self and world
safety and comfort nestled in womb
sweet heartache... first love's nip
Lifetimes of lovers come and gone
muscle cars; backseats and drive ins
four legged friends and two faced enemies
wakes lost in faded waters

These are prayer poems by Michael R. Burch, along with a few hymns. There are also poems on the subject of God and religion—Christianity in particular.
I Pray Tonight

I pray tonight

When I prayed to God,
He answered me with thunder,
With streaks in the sky.
Oh such a glorious invitation
What a spiritual adventure to walk with the Most High
Infinite God and finite man on a love expedition
Oh, what mystery encamps the steer!
Deeper still He woos intently
Through faith's alley abide completely
In the dark, uncertain, hear the voice
Follow steadily without noise

Pause…let this moment sit
The work in the background needs time
Each phase requests an interlude
An introduction, a response
It must unfold right
Why should we fill up this space?
Being helpless is a scare
Stillness, why demand being there
So unnerving is the stare
