A Lovely Lie

A witching smile my Eumenis endears,
But mightier is the magic of her tears.
But yesterday, from some unthought-of cloud,
Came sudden gusts of sobs, her head was bowed
Low on my neck, and from her eyes' eclipse
Tears mingled with the meeting of our lips.
Why dost thou weep? Lest thou shouldst leave me, dear.
It was a lie, but one I loved to hear.
