The Sea

A whole sea between us-

You said we could meet half-way, if we swam.
You said we could, it is only a sea-

Today the waves arriving were wild and cold and white,
Spelling December,
De-cem-ber-

And my heart made a leap, like a baby dolphin,
Shivered, learned to swim and somersaulted
Towards another month, a new year-

When my heart reaches your shore
The sea will be smooth, clear and sweet,
A burning blue.

You will feel
On the warmest part of your neck,
somewhere half-way between jawbone and shoulder

My heart beating this rhythmic confession:
a-ni o-he-vet ot-kha

a-ni
o-he-vet
ot-kha
