I sat on the train from London to Glasgow
And passed not a word with anyone there
Half way through the journey
I took all my clothes off
If anyone noticed
I wasn’t aware.
I sat on a train from Rome down to Naples
And learnt the life history of everyone there
Ate bread and salami
With a lady from Bari
A man from Perugia
Sang a song from Paliacci
And babies were crying
And people were laughing
And a man from Cattania
Whose wife had just left him
Was telling his tale
To the lady from Bari
Who knew about life
And was so understanding -
When the train stopped in Naples
I wasn’t aware.
