Namrata Suryawanshi

To My Mother

(on independence day's eve)

At times,
I might have cursed you,
I might have hated you when things looked bad,
I might have even thought of leaving you forever,
But I was a fool.
I was so naive.
You took me under your protective wings and sheltered me for all these years,
You kept me safe,
You gave me everything I needed, and a little more.
I can never thank you enough for that.
You might have some issues, but don't I have them too?
You might not be perfect, but I have shades of gray too.
And you are not a different entity.
You are what we make you to be.
You took care of me for all these years,
but now I am no kid,
I've grown up to know my responsibilities,
and now it's my turn to look after you,
to fix your problems and to work on your imperfections.
Because, I really owe it to you.
And you know it's true when I say,
it's you who beats inside me,
it's you who runs in my veins.
And I am proud to be your child, my mother.
My country.
mera Hindusthan.
maza Bharat desh.
my India.
I am so proud of you.
63 years ago, on today's day, your children freed you from the grips of some stranger tyrants.
But I know, you were never really freed, not on all counts.
Your suffering still goes on,
this time, at the hands of your own children.
And today I promise you,
that I will do my bit to free you from these new tyrants,
by doing my jobs honestly and sincerely, with my conscience intact,
and by encouraging others to do the same.
So that one day, you will be set free in the true sense of the word.
And until that happens, we promise you,
that we won't give up on you,
Because we all love you.
And as for this day, with all my heart,
I wish a very 'Happy Independence Day' to you!
