Light In The Darkness

Baffled and blind as bats in the day,
But cheered and guided well on the way,
Morning by morning and year after year
In darkness and faith are we wandering here.

In faith, and in darkness; no wisdom can tell
How Providence cares for His children so well;
Will cannot hinder, nor keenness foresee
What Destiny holds in the darkness for me!

This only we well may rejoice to be sure,
That Duty is Safety serene and secure,
That if a man does what he does for the best
Whatever the Consequence, Conscience goes blest.

Who shall declare what a day may bring forth?
Who can foretell what travails in birth?
Who can forecast the secrets of Time,
Buoyant with innocence,-- burdened with crime?

What may have lifted or humbled my head
Or ever the coming to-morrow has fled?
What may have brighten'd or blacken'd my way
Or ever to-night has extinguish'd to-day?

Well: God is the Guide: my Father, my Friend,
My King, and my Judge, from beginning to end:
In faith, I rejoice that He leads me aright,
And, though there be darkness, He is my Light.
