Regret

If it were necessary to say 'Hello'
We would have done it long years ago.
I live for the day when you're not near,
It wasn't necessary to refer to yesteryear.
Dance not attendance on my name -
It isn't clever, it isn't sane.
And when all this is understood
We shall behave to one another as we should,
With dignity, forbearing and restraint;
after all, neither of us was a Saint.
You helped me through my wildest hour
When all in living had turned sour.
Your kindness was of the abstract sort,
Where little things gave us some rapport.
and now that there is nothing left for us
We can truthfully, and with all our heart say,
Ashes to Ashes -
Dust to Dust.
