The Soldier's Refrain

I awoke to my own corpse
And flowers my lover brought.
The war was fought
And not fought enough.

We had died dutifully
And followed orders perfectly.
The war was understood
But not understood enough.

We marched to save a memory
And struck it into history.
The war was long
And not long enough.

We shed our youth’s eternity
And pawned it into legacy.
The war was remembered
But not remembered enough.

We raised our flags to the Sun
And bled our hearts in unison.
The war was song
And not song enough.

We fell in front of family
And shared bread in solidarity.
The war was familiar
But not familiar enough.

We praised ourselves in certainty
And poached a hero’s destiny.
The war was real
But not real enough.

We were taught not to forgive
And killed ourselves to live.
The war was tough
But not tough enough.

In the end there was no victory.
In the end we met our enemy.
The war was won
And not won enough

For I lie dead
And I am not dead enough.
