Transfiguration

TRANSFIGURATION

“And when you have done up my stitches….
Wake me up near the Altar…………..
And this poem will be finished”
Christopher Okigbo.

Day tolled the bell, driving them away
From antiseptic corridors,
And groans of ailing men.
Who said my eyes were still closed?
Just ask the Night Nurse whether they were.
I know she could not tell me
And that a death sentence was hard to pronounce.
But I could see the lie beyond her lips
As I silently returned my Ave Maria.

I am the life and the Resurrection said the Son.
And He proved it beyond lepers and generals.
He that believes in me shall never die.
And He returned to the work unfinished.

I heard the first songs of the birds
As their footsteps died into the distance
That was the third corpse that night
And then there was life.

Don’t tell me Lazarus was a con man
Just look at the PM report on him
But he promised that it was free
And two fishes and five loaves
Were more than enough?
The Gates are of Gold
But he begged to eat
And never had a home
Tell me how many times
The President gave him audience
Or the Ministry a citation for
Finding the cure for life.
I am dumb with all the lies
Were you there when they Crucified Him?

He kept his words beyond the diagnosis
And proved three was one
Do I wake or asleep?
