There once was a priestess
Born a long time ago...
A famous voodoo queen...
Named Marie Catherine Laveau...
She was born in the French Quarter
Back in 1801...
And within a matter of years
Her powerful work had begun...
She was born a wealthy creole
A person of color who was free...
Her father was a noble, gentle man
Her mother was pretty, part Cherokee...
Marie married in the St Louis Cathedral
To a man named Jacque Paris...
She quickly had a daughter
And then the newlyweds were three...
Jacque was a good carpenter
Building tables, chairs and more...
He truly loved his beautiful Marie
And soon there were four...
Shortly thereafter the last birth
Her beloved Jacque was to die...
That left young Marie and her babies
On their own journey to get by...
So she opened a beauty salon
Making house calls to the rich...
She learned all their secrets
Promising to never ever snitch...
But soon she discovered their secrets
Could be kept for a hefty price...
She would create secret potions
From ancient recipes with much spice...
She learned early on
To use her powers with refrain...
As her ability to cast spells
Should never be used in vain...
She practiced her voodoo
While employed as a midwife...
It was her ability to cast spells
That caused bad people much strife...
But then in June of 1881
Her life finally came to an end...
She was surround by her family
And Glapion, her lifelong boyfriend...
Marie Laveau and her history
Have been surrounded by legend and lore...
But as of that one fateful evening
Her voodoo would be practiced never more...
The rumor has Marie buried in a tomb
Located in St Louis #1 cemetery...
But we will truly never know
As Marie’s spirit will remain legendary...
