The oak smiled down
upon the willow,
"Are you my friend?"
"I am," replied the willow.
The oak admired the young willow
for her delicacy and her beauty...
"I shall protect you
from the winds and the rains
as the poets and lovers shall
have need of you one day..."
and the willow sang
in the morning breeze;
The years passed
and the storms came and went...
the oak was strong and
the willow grew more beautiful...
one day, a man from the town
went into the fields
and he felled the oak
with his axe...
he took it away
and the willow grieved
to the evening winds
as two lovers drew near
and a poet on a distant hill
smiled over his work.
