I am in the process of going through and organizing all of my poems. I came across the following poem I wrote back in 1998. I got a little nostalgic reading about being nostalgic. It is so sad that kids today can’t do all that we did. If you like, check out mywebsite at www.gregmcole.com.
Summer Simplicity
Catchin’ fireflies with tails burning bright;
Little voices that echo in the night;
Giggles and screams, rolling in the grass;
Sweet innocence created to last.
Hide ‘n seek – “Ollie, oxen in free!”
Freeze tag – “You’ll never catch me!”
Ridin’ your bike, wind in your hair;
Not worrying about what clothes you wear.
Smiles and laughter, a bright summer face;
Childish wisdom with childish grace,
“Are we there yet?” – showing a toothless grin,
As snow cone juice runs down your chin.
Remember when that was you and me?
Enjoying each day, running wild and free;
But along the way we forgot how;
“Without a care” is just a memory now.
