The Gods at the A&P

Year after year, if memory serves me well,
shortly before sunset we would fall under
that spell
our thoughts, like gleaming arrows,
would shoot up over the birds
and our fingers trace
the outline of our calves
like huskies on the scent of snow
our land claims were marked in stone
( we both want it all )
and indeed all the way
to the planet Tuisto
at dawn we would listen to
Isoldes Liebestod
( Margaret Price as Isolde)
then, with nothing between the ears but air,
we would step
into the day´s performance
the houses were bright and full
even at the A&P
the gods were standing on line
