Confession

Merely to live, O Sweet, and know thee mine!
To see the sun drip gold on yonder hill,
Or watch the canyons of the twilight fill
With purple of the night's enchanted wine!
To whisper, as the lingering stars decline,
Thy name to blossoms beautiful and still,
And hear in loneliness the winds a-thrill
Between the sighing sea and mournful pine!

That were enough. . . . But nay! my shadowed heart
Hath seen the peaceless angel in thine own,
And heard a sigh for all that cannot be.
I will not lie: where Heaven abides, thou art,
O star that passing to a land unknown
Hast left thy ray within my spirit's seal.
