It is not hopeless,
Though they seem lifeless;
The moon beams no less,
When the sky's starless!
In bliss all sleepers rise,
Like summer night fireflies!
And Jesus' love rectifies,
When holiness sanctifies.
It is not quite so bad,
Nor moreover quite so sad.
Beside this stone ivy-clad,
Earth weeps, heaven is glad!
It is not such a tragedy,
Too lucky in love are we;
And not so great catastrophe;
Only the door to eternity!
