Beast of Eight

I lay peacefully, head upon my pillow,
Until I see movement in my peripheral.
Was fuzz I thought,
But…maybe not?
I begin to rise,
My eyes searching, seeking.
Yet, I see no fuzz at all.
All I see,
is something sprinting,
sprinting straight to me…

Shrieking, I clamber quickly for the bedroom floor.
Quickly to find safety from the beast I fear before me.
Eyes like death stare out from under the pillow below.
I know he hungers.
His beady eyes with lust aflame
My blood like wine to bathe within
In my heart my fears grow greatly,
I cry to Christ, “My Savior save me!”
But ever the beast stares on intently.
Steadfast I stand, heart beating quickly.
My eyes, searching for a way to destroy thee,
See the weapon I plan to employ…
He…
he’s gone.

With lantern alight, I search for the creature.
Lest he come upon me under the cover of darkness.
Fearfully, but bravely, I prod the bed’s wood frame.
Flip flop in hand I call to him,
“Harken here beast of eight,
Hide yourself well.
For when I find you,
I will rip your soul from this mortal existence,
All while laughing as you crawl desperately, desperately back to Hell.”

I rapped one of the bedposts,
And to my surprise it seemed he’d doubled back.
No doubt to catch me unawares.
But before I could get him,
He had already scurried back to the bedframe.
“You may pray to the Devil. But I will find you.
And when I do…”

Now I sit watching…waiting…
