Hodson Of Hodson's Horse

Not his the lifelong loud renown,
The head with weight of years grown gray:
But his a gallant glorious day
Of tented field and 'leaguered town,

Of swift surprise and breathless ride:
A short adventurous life, wherein
Like some death-courting paladin
Greatly he dared, and greatly died.

And his a name to rouse again
Memories of battles, wild or sad,
Of stricken camps his smile made glad,
And roaring fights on hill and plain,

Old forays of the field and ford, -
Brave echoes from brave years that were,
A trumpet-call, a clinking spur,
And chiming of a swinging sword.
