Rolling out of bed
the smell of bitter morning air ringing through her nose
cold, creaky wooden floors licking at her feet
the sigh of a teenage girl looking at herself in the mirror
this is the sound of winning
That girl ate breakfast today
she walked to school
and she wasn't snappy around her parents
this is the sound of winning
that girl got through the day without falling asleep
that girl ate lunch today
she didn't stop to look at herself in every reflection
this is the sound of winning
This girl went home and did her homework
she ate dinner with her family
and she even went to bed early
but if this is the sound of winning, doesn't it mean there is still an option of losing?
if this was the sound of winning, then why was it still a battle?
Wouldn’t it be so much easier to just surrender?
lost on the misty battlefield, she could feel herself fall to her knees
waving a red flag
that perfect day was gone, as the girl lay crying on her mattress sheets
the cheers rang out from those who had conquered her
this is the sound of winning
And it's also the sound of losing
But, can you even tell the difference?
